The following is a copy of the commission authorizing Albert Gallatin Philips to be sheriff of Duval County, dated February 16, 1833, signed by governor William P. Duval:

WILLIAM P. DUVAL

GOVERNOR OF THE TERRITORY OF FLORIDA

To all who shall see these presents, Greetings:

KNOW YE that reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism and abilities of --

ALBERT G. PHILIPS, Esquire, I have on this day by and with the advice of the Legislative Council appointed him -

A SHERIFF -- in and for the county of -- DUVAL in said Territory, and I do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfill the duties of that office, and to hold the said office with all powers and privileges and emoluments to the same of right appertaining, according to law.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF I have caused the Seal of the Territory of Florida to be hereunto affixed.

 

GIVEN UNDER MY HAND at the CITY of TALLAHASSEE This Sixteenth day of February --- Anno Domini -- One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the fifty-seventh Year.
